GUENMAI, PARIS

This place is a little hidden gem. We’d been wandering around Notre Dame and Shakespeare Book Company and it was starting to near lunch time. We’d had a look at a couple of “classic cafe” menus and there wasn’t really anything gluten free friendly for my gluten free bestie Lex so Aaron swooped in to the rescue and found this place. Hero.

Not entirely Vegan, they also had fish on the menu, but everything was clearly labelled and our friendly server spoke perfect English and was more than happy to talk us through the menus which were entirely in French.

La Santé par l’Alimentation translates to good nutrition through eating. I was entirely convinced up until the point of trying to find the address to include in this post that that was the name of the cafe! It was a few days later when I realised it is called Guenmai.

The cafe is on Rue de l’abbaye in Saint Germain, a short walk away from attractions like Pont des Arts (the bridge that used to have all the love locks on – it may not have the locks any more but it still has a super pretty view) and The Louvre. Saint Germain is also a wonderful place to just wander around with lots of pretty streets and cool arty shops.

This is the Sweet Potato tart with salad  and top picture was one of the day’s specials; it included a tofu scramble, chickpeas in a tomato sauce, pickles, rice and bulgar wheat. It was really tasty and incredibly healthy. The kind that makes you feel instantly better and energised about life.

The beer was made from quinoa and had a picture of a llama on. Sounds amazing but it was really, aggressively frothy and difficult to drink. My beer sources tell me this is also available in the UK if you wanted to try this out for yourself.

We all really enjoyed our meals here but it was frickin’ expensive. I think the tofu scramble bits and bobs plate was around €22 which is just awful. Not purse friendly by anyone’s standards. I think I’d only really recommend going here if money is no object to you. I’d much rather go to Hank Burger for every meal whilst in Paris!

Find Guenmai at 6 Rue Cardinale, 75006 Paris, France.
