When did you go vegan?
The end of 2010
Why did you go vegan?
It was a combination of being bored, wanting to be healthier and trying to get rid of my adult acne. After I got into the lifestyle for health reasons, I watched a couple documentaries and Youtube video about animal cruelty, and switched over to veganism for ethical reason and never looked back.
What have you found challenging/difficult?
Honestly, my journey has not been all that difficult aside from other people, and their opinions. After I mentally switched to veganism as a personal protest against animal cruelty, I found the “struggles” just weren’t struggles anymore, they were simply part of the journey. No struggle I had/have is as terrible as what those animal go through, so I changed my thinking around them completely– instead of struggles, I now see them as tasks or hurdles to overcome for a greater purpose. The main challenge I now face is non-vegans and the lack of education around veganism. There are only so many times you feel like explaining why you get enough protein before you go insane-hehe 😉
I still find it shocking and barbaric that we test cosmetics on animals. I will never get over that one. It seems so unnecessary to me.
If you could say anything to your previous non-Vegan-self what would it be?
Veganism will chnage your life, and you don’t even know it yet.
What are your favourite Vegan restaurants/cafes/shops?
My two favourites in Toronto right now are Hogtown Vegan and Apiecalypse Pizza. They are two vegan comfort food spots that I can bring any omni and impress them with amazing vegan food.
What is your favourite/best Vegan documentary/book/Instagram account/blog/YouTuber?
I love VeganFoodShare
on instagram because they share such indulgent vegan meals- it’s great for recipe/dinner inspiration. I also think that everyone should watch Cowspiracy
— there is so much more than just “meat” that most dont know about the animal agriculture industry.
I would DIE, if I could invite Woody Harrelson over for dinner. I would also have to invite Jared Leto, Lisa Simpson and Pam Anderson over to the party as well though. I would serve kimchi toasts as my appetizer, my jackfruit pulled “pork” tacos
with mango salsa and lime crema as the main, and my homemade mint chip ice cream
with coconut chocolate crumbles for dessert.
What advice would you give someone who was thinking about going vegan?
Learn how to cook, it’s the greatest life skill you will ever master. Use the amazing vegan substitutions available to create meals you already love and know how to prepare. You will then get over that “I will be deprived” feeling that so many people associate with the vegan diet.
Please can you show us a picture of the inside of your fridge/cupboards?
This is a terrible photo of my makeshift pantry. I keep all my dry ingredients on top of our cupboards because we don’t have space for them anywhere else in our Toronto condo.
