Why did you go vegan?

I went veggie in December 2014 because it was something I’d been thinking about for a while. I then decided to give up dairy as I was having problems with my skin. As I researched more into vegetarian and dairy free recipes I found out more and more about the animal agriculture industry and finally asked myself if I didn’t need to be using animal products, then why was I?

What have you found challenging/difficult?

I found the food side of it pretty easy because I don’t eat out a huge amount and I’ve always enjoyed cooking mostly from scratch. The hardest part was beauty and cleaning products – it took a lot more searching to find things that were both vegan and cruelty free. Luckily there are a lot of helpful Facebook groups out there!

What product most surprised you when you found out it wasn’t Vegan/Cruelty free?

I think it was the sheer amount of crisps that have milk powder added to them. Why?!

If you could say anything to your previous non-Vegan-self what would it be?

Probably the biggest way to convince myself to try vegan when I was omni would be to tell me that cooking is waaay more creative when you’re not using animal products!

What is your favourite Vegan restaurants?

I went to Mildred’s in Camden recently and had an amazing smoked tofu burger – that’s probably my favourite so far.

What/Who is your favourite:

Books – Cookbooks I love currently are Aine Carlin – Keep It Vegan, Sue Quinn – Easy Vegan and Katy Beskow – 15 Minute Vegan

Instagram@stop_hannahtime, @katiemcfrlne, @amyxina, @notsoquietgrrl, @lucie_dumpling (all of who also have blogs/ youtube channels which I love too!)

YouTubers – My wife and I sit down to watch Family Fizz every day. I also love Robyn Eede and London Afro Vegan for food hauls, and Jess Beautician for cruelty free make up recommendations.

Which well-known vegans would you have at your fantasy dinner party and what 3 course meal would you serve?

I tried to Google famous vegans but Google wasn’t giving me a definite response on whether anyone is definitely vegan. Can I invite my wife and vegan friends instead?!

I actually recently cooked a three course meal which went down pretty well, so I’ll be unoriginal and re-use the menu:

Starter: Garlic and pimento stuffed olives, and rosemary and sea salt focaccia served with balsamic vinegar and olive oil

Main: Lemon and basil pasta with a basil, rocket and tomato salad

Dessert: Salted caramel pie with dairy free vanilla ice cream

What advice would you give someone who was thinking about going vegan?

Start slow if you need to and don’t beat yourself up for making a mistake or slipping up – it happens to everyone.

Please can you show us a picture of the inside of your fridge/cupboards?

I’ve tried to convince my wife that we need to move house so that I can have a bigger spice cupboard, but it hasn’t worked so far.
