KILBURN IRONWORKS

Brunch (noun): a late breakfast/early lunch that you can attend without showering; where you can order chips & a diet coke with your tofu scramble and not be judged. Everybody worth knowing loves brunch.

I was tasked to find a brunch spot for my friend Lex‘s post birthday night out shenanigans that would cater to 4 vegans, 3 omnivores and 1 new Vegetarian and I was given 1 stipulation by the birthday girl = bottomless prosecco (I know what you’re thinking and you’re right: she is ace).

The Kilburn Ironworks don’t have Vegan brunch options on their menu but they do have bottomless prosecco for £15 and they’re local to Lex, so I sent them an email to see if they would accommodate us and I was really pleased when they didn’t bat an eyelid and sent me over 4 mouth watering options for us to choose from.

I know what you’re thinking… If they can come up with 4 Vegan options for me and my pals to choose from then why can’t they have at least 1 of these permanently on their menu so that there’s no need to email ahead to see if a menu can be tailored at all…

The Vegan options they offered us were:

Vegan Full Ironworks

Scrambled tofu, roast vine tomato,
flat mushroom, grilled non dairy cheese, potato cake, spinach pancakes, home braised beans, sourdough toast £8.90

Huevos Rancheros

Roast butternut squash, spiced beans, red bell pepper, sautéed onions, chopped tomatoes, sliced avocado, non dairy cheese, served on a tortilla £7.90

Sweetcorn Fritters

Non dairy cheese, kasundi (Indian tomato relish) smashed avocado & lime £7.90 (heads up – this option is tiny)

Vegan Full Lebanese

Scrambled tofu, flat bread, vine cherry tomatoes, falafel, grilled non dairy cheese, ful moudamas (broad bean dip), zaator (herbs), soya yogurt £7.90

I went for the Huevos Rancheros which was pretty nice. The vegan cheese they used was delicious, the butternut squash was sweet & smoky and the portion was massive.

Tom went for the Vegan Full Ironworks. The tofu scramble was lovely, as was the potato cake and the spinach pancakes. Tom gave it an 8 out of 10.

It would be great to see them put at least 1 of the Vegan options on the menu permanently as it’s such a great place and it would certainly attract a lot more customers. It’s good to see restaurants accommodating for ‘dietary requests’ when requested but at the same time it’s so frustrating that they haven’t got Vegan options on the menu already, especially when the Chefs are clearly more than capable of coming up with something tasty!

The service was impeccable and the staff were really friendly. I’d definitely recommend brunch at Kilburn Ironworks if you’re in the area.
